archaic

The term archaic in the context of paleontology (the study of the history of life through fossils) refers both to extinct plants and animals and to those in a stage of their evolution that no longer exists in the present time. An example of an archaic human is the Neanderthal; and an example of an archaic animal is the Megatherium, an elephant-sized mammal that evolved into the much smaller sloth of today.
